East Syracuse, NY— Make-A-Wish® Central New York, along with supporters, volunteers and wish families, gathered today at the nonprofit’s East Syracuse office for a press conference to officially kick off the organization's 30th year of granting wishes.
Founding members Susan Tormey and Don Hamilton, both of Syracuse, shared their reflections on the early days of Make-A-Wish Central New York, including what motivated them to form the chapter. Since Tormey, Hamilton and the other four founding members began the chapter in 1985, more than 1,500 wishes have been granted to children with life-threatening medical conditions throughout the chapter’s 15-county footprint.
Wish Granting Volunteers Deborah Bender, of Fayetteville, and Marilyn Sanson, of Kirkville, shared memories and stories from two decades of wish granting, and adult “Wish Kid” Nikki Bronner, of Hastings, spoke about the impact of her wish, which was granted when she was 18. The Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor, featured in Make-A-Wish Central New York’s 2015 calendar, recently “paid it forward” and helped sponsor a wish for a local child.
Make-A-Wish Central New York President and CEO Diane Kuppermann expressed sincere gratitude to the community for helping ensure the chapter reached this significant anniversary.
“We are especially pleased to mark this milestone with very special people who bring our mission to life,” Kuppermann said. “We look forward to this celebratory year, as well as to making many more wishes come true throughout the next 30.”
